In anticipation of the official 10/11/12 “launch” of Gilbert Mansergh’s novel, The Marvelous Journals of Miss Virginia Pettingill, the tables are turned on October’s Word By Word: Conversations With Writers broadcast this Thursday night at 7:00 pm on KRCB-FM (91.1 FM in Santa Rosa, or streaming online at krcb.org).
Gil takes the “writer’s chair” for questions from guest host Patricia V. Davis, the bestselling author, editor-in-chief of Harlot’s Sauce e-magazine, president of Harper Davis Publishing, and founding director of the Women’s PowerStrategy Conference.
Based on stories Gil’s mother told of her childhood, The Marvelous Journals of Miss Virginia Pettingill features the private writings of a short, bespectacled, precocious 11-year-old girl “cursed” with the ability of Sight which she must keep secret from everyone except her best friend, Tibby Bloomberg. Encouraged to be talented and “ladylike” by her suffragist mother, and a tomboy by her sportsman doctor father in 1921 Gloucester, Massacusetts, Virginia recruits Tibby and the boys from the neighborhood baseball team to use creativity, skill, determination, friendship and “guts” to change things for the better in America’s busiest fishing port.
The book’s official launch party starts at 7:00 pm, October 11th, at the NEW Sebastopol Center for the Arts (at the Sebastopol Veterans Building 282 South High Street, 95472), and all Petaluma 360 readers are invited to “meet” Miss Virginia Pettingill and share some of her favorite tea and blueberry cake.
